Greetings from grey Birmingham (Brum).
I read John's advice from some years ago about using 'proper' seed compost, as the results are better!  The SHL seed compost certainly sounds good, but does anyone know where I can buy it please? Or another make you'd recommend? 
Have car, will travel, or reasonable delivery cost.

I trying B & Q's multipurpose compost this year.  Apparently it came out top in Which tests for every stage of growing

B & Q is fine, if the seeds are tiny ones you can always sieve some compost first to get it a bit finer

As Granjan says best and one of the cheapest, make sure you get the peat based one as the peat free version did not do well.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the suggestions.
I've actually got 9 large bags of All Purpose from Homebase, bought before Christmas so as to be prepared... The first bag has a lot of 'bits' in it so I reckon that will be fine for potting on later, - I'm assuming the others are the same, hence my mooching for proper seed compost. I'll try B&Q All purpose peat based. Sadly I didn't get good results with the peat free either.  Thanks again.

I've already mentioned the B&Q stuff I bought was absolutely FULL of slug eggs. I've also noticed that it drys out really quickly.

im going to be keeping well away from b&q branded stuff shame as its cheap, i guess you get what you pay for.

yes you get what you pay for i have the same oppinion about b&q compost though i allways sieve what ever compost i use i used to get murphys but one year it went down hill as well hardly composted very poor havent bought any of it since allso using westlands this year.so far its been good.
