Onion set question.
« on: February 12, 2010, 14:09 »
Ive just bought a pack of red onion sets from Wilcos.

Now, what do I do with them?

Last year (my first year on the plot) I planted onions from seed with limited success. The onion sets I now have are just a bit bigger that a garlic clove. And red  ;)

Do I simply push them into the ground pointy side up? If so, when is the best time to do this, the bag came without destructions. Is there a trick to this process?

Thanks.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

They came without destructions Rough :(

Yes, pointy side up :) Don't push them into the ground though as this may damage the bit at the bottom that the roots will grow from. Just make a little dent with your finger and bury them up to their necks. Check after a few days to make sure the birds haven't pulled them up.

Thanks mumsy, give a good watering too?

When do I put them in, when the last frost has been & gone?

The store was very warm, so were the onions. I think I will leave them in the greenhouse to chill out.

There'll be plenty of moisture around this time of year without watering them!

I'll do mine about mid March.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Rather than poke your finger to make a hole. I would open a slit with a trowel then pop it in. Poking wih a finger may make a @pan@ under the set which when it produces roots could lift the set out of the soil.

i grow around 1500-2000 onions every year mainly from sets.
the fastest and best way of planting on this scale,is to mark out your bed and use a draw hoe down the stringline to make a 1-1.5" trench.simply place the sets 3" apart in the trench then back draw the soil you moved to make the trench.
no compaction of soil to cause bulb lift, and they seem to get a flying start.a steady dose of fbb down the run and the jobs a goodun.bob
