Watering under cloches
« on: February 12, 2010, 08:45 »
Just a simple question.
She who must be obeyed bought me some lovely large plastic cloches for Christmas.
They stretch to about 5 yards long and are fixed to the ground with wire hoops (I'm sure you know the sort).
My problem is - how do I water the plants when the cloches sre in situe?
It would be a job to remove them every evening, water and then replace, single handed.
If I water over them so the water runs down the sides, will that get to the plant roots?
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

I really wouldn't think you would need to water much at all at this time of year.
Later in the year it still wouldnt be every evening. Can you not lift the poly a little at the sides and water under the edge?

Once plants are established I don't water much at all. Under cloches they tend to keep damper anyway. When the weather gets better you'll want to take the cloches off altogether.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Ta for replies.
I always thought one of the uses for cloches was to protect the plants during their growing season, keeping pests off as well as protecting plants from the elements.
So should I take them off when the plants have grown a bit?
I am of course looking a long way ahead here.
I could get some soaker hose and put that down the tunnel, I suppose.
