Chickens
« on: February 10, 2010, 17:13 »
I would love to get some pigs in future . I am also thinking about chickens and a cockerel. One problem I believe they can be agressive and I would like some info on this as I would be very concerned about this kind of behaviour.

Any thoughts on what I should do?.

Thanks.

I have 3 cockerels and none of them are aggressive, I don't know if it is because they free range or what, but none of them were born here and one I got was about 3 years old when he came to me. Out of the 3 only 1 will let me handle hin when he is outside - the other 2 will let me pick them up out of their coups so that is good for checking them over and giving them any treatment. I don't know if I have been lucky with these or what.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I had one aggressive chicken.  I dunked him in a bucket of water and he was sorted!! Basically you scare the *t out of them.

Why would you want a cockerel though?

Hi, i have an 'accidental cockerel', and he is lovely...noisey, but lovely.  i didnt plan on getting a cockerel as i dont want to breed, but i have to say he looks after his girls and  keeps them in order ....its very sweet to see him swooning over his girls ;)

I'd love a cockerel in the right circumstances ... we are too urban here for it to be fair on the neighbours, although a house up the road has two or three ... and 16 hens in the space we give our eight.
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

I am on my second cockerel as the first did turn out to be very agressive and none of the ideas for curbing his behaviour worked. I decided to try again as I know many people as well as those on this site who are very happy with their cockerels. Like people they are all different. :)

I would love to keep pigs as well and have done a course. Unfortunately my land is too wet for pigs. :(

What makes you say that?  I am on heavy clay and as long as you have enough space pigs can be kept on clay.

My land really is very wet we are on a flood plain. There is the additional concern that it is very old pasture and it would be a shame to churn it up with pigs. My local farmer always comments on how good my hay is and what a pleasure it is to work on my land as there is so little undisturbed pasture around. I consider myself very lucky and only a custodian of this land.

Ok now I understand.

Good on you.  May be you can ask your friendly farmer if there is a wooded area you can use if he uses your meadow?  Pigs love the woods.  You may find a truffle or two.

If only. I am constantly on the look out for suitable woods. Ideally they need to be fairly close by. I would hate to get pigs and then find it was a real chore because of having to travel further. I will keep looking though, I am a great believer in giving things time and they often sort themselves out.
