We don't have a hen house in the sky, but our hens (hen at the moment) do have a ladder to climb up as their pop hole is an old window in a small outbuilding we have got.  They got the hang of it pretty quicky (there is also one inside to help them get up and down in the house - they can jump up but one or two to start with had a bit of trouble with this one.  The 'ladder' is a plank of wood with 'rungs' nailed on at about 2 inch intervals so they have something to climb up.  They do struggle a bit when it is icy but generally seem to like it.  Infact when it is time for bed if you open the outbuilding door they won't go in that way, the way to bed is up the ladder!

Ours are in a lenham which is on a stand so they have to climb a ladder to get in .. and love to use the underneath as their dust bath.  I remember Hugh's "chicken heaven" idea well ..

I have this picture in my head of a chicken climbing into a sort of tiny chair lift, eating breakfast corn to make her heavier, thus the chair lowers her to the ground, then, carefully aiming over the edge, pooping to make it go up to bed.
