New to growing shallots
« on: February 07, 2010, 16:52 »
I have checked other shallot threads but can't find what I would like to ask.

OK, at the risk of sounding dim - I am hoping that more than one shallot grows from the one shallot bulb planted?  Do they develop in clusters like garlic? Is it one per one like onion sets??

Thanks

They will grow into a cluster so one bulb creates more than one shallot.  I think  :)

Yes.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You should get at least 5 or 6 shallots from each bulb planted. Just grow them and treat them like you would with onion sets. They tend to keep longer than onions and are a little sweeter. They can also be grown as an alternative to spring onions which I prefer.

shallots like a LONG growing seaon so get em in early - I usually get them in now when the weather has improved a bit - I usually fleece them for the first month....

For the last few years i have planted my shallots in cell trays and got them off to a flying start, although there is no need to do this as they can be planted direct into the ground. I have been averaging about 18 to a cluster.

No need for fleece = they are tough.
