eggs
« on: February 06, 2010, 19:03 »
Evening all

3 of my 4 girls I think are laying. I think I can tell be the size of the eggs to the but there is one I am stuck on. I found an egg today that was brown and had white speckles all over it. I have a light sussex but I also have a hybrid brown that has a lot of white on her back.

Does anybody else have these eggs from light sussex or is it my brown?

Many thanks alex

Sorry Alex I'm not sure.  The way I found out which eggs were from which hens was watching them go in to lay and grabbing the egg.  That way I noticed the differences between them in terms of size and shape.

you could always try and rig something up at the entrance of your nesting box that leaves a chalk mark on the chicken that is laying.
im not always at home in the day and it took me awhile to find out which of our chucks was the solo layer the rest are being lazy.
One light Sussex , two bluebells, two white stars, two speckled stars , two cream legbars.

My light sussex (pure breeds not the hybrid type) lay a 'tinted' egg. ie a dark cream colour - when they actually do bother to lay that is!

I can tell the Rhode Rock eggs by their colour ... and the pale eggs are the Light Sussex, but there are days when I have more tinted eggs than ex-batt hens ... so some of the others must occasionally lay an egg of a different hue!  ::)

Just a note for confusion. We have Blackrocks and Warrens. The eggs can anything from chocolate brown to bright white, may have a dark end and a light end, may be with or without light or dark speckles and are of varying sizes. Best of luck.

I found this site quite interesting
http://www.roosterbooster.co.uk/egg_colours.html

but not completely reliable - they're all individuals aren't they.
Besides, I'm not entirely sure of the breeding of most of my girls...
I bought what I thought was three very young australorp hens last summer and now I think they were bantams - they're still not very big but have combs and there are some lovely little eggs being laid - creamy coloured.
