Just planted my first ever seeds!
« on: February 06, 2010, 17:09 »
Yay! Just planted my first ever seeds and I'm very excited!! I've planted some peppers, some herbs (parsley & basil) and some garlic! I really hope they grow I am going to be so excited when the first bits of green starts to show. I've planted them in pots indoors in my spare room in front of a large window which gets a lot of sun.

Bit worried about when it comes to replanting the seedlings once they have grown a bit - I am so going to break them or something! :( ah well got a few weeks yet!

Oh and also I have put my pots onto gravel in a tray and it took us FOREVER to find any gravel! We don't have a car but we live in the centre of Leeds so I would have thought it would have been easier than that! Wilkos didn't have any and neither did "The Range" (loads bigger than Wilkos but had hardly any garden stuff in comparison!). I ended up going to a pet shop in the market and getting some gravel they use in fish tanks - hope it will be ok!

You can happily stick your garlic outside and save some window space ;)

If you think you're excited now, wait until you're eating them :D

Better than drugs huh?

Hello PinkDC
As Yabba says garlic will be OK outside and so will parsley if you gradually acclimatise them to outside temperatures. Basil will need to be kept inside until there is no chance of frost. I grow lots of various veg and herbs but have never grown Basil from seed. I cheat and buy a pot already in growth from the super market, pot it on a time or two and its great from May through to September. Remember it’s from the Mediterranean and it likes hot, dry conditions.

Lots of other things to try. Don't give up if you have a few failures. The guys on here will give you lots of advice.

GOOD LUCK.

Good luck pinkdaisychain.  Don't try to pot them on too early.  People usually say to wait until they have two true leaves (not the first two these are cotyledons or something similar!) and they will be easier to handle but be as careful as you can and they will grow well.

A good feeling indeed..last year was our first go.

We only had a smallish window with good light but still we packed 1/2 the room with pots!..ha.. most of them bolted so this year we will put up a kitchen foil reflector at the back to slow this down (as per Gardeners World). It all went to plan regardless.

I just wish I'd made notes though as now I can't remember what, when or how we did things.

Good luck.

Excuse me.

I wonder where Gardener's World have picked this tip up from?

Here's one I posted on this very forum a mere 3 years ago, for example.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh and thanks guys for the tip about the cardboard box with foil inside, I have set this up around the back of my seedlings-to-be so they should get all round light now!!!

I'm not quite sure what you mean?

You can go to the first unread post by clicking on the 'New' button rather than the thread title.

And you can subscribe to a thread when making a post by using Additional Options - Notify me of replies (below message box).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
