Where to get a water bowser?
« on: May 24, 2007, 14:29 »
I'm just wondering if anyone knows where I could get a small water bowser on wheels (is that what you call it?) to use at my allotment.

We have mains water but not on every plot and I have to cross the road in the middle of the plots to get it which is not great with a 2 year old in tow!

Any advice would be helpful, thanks
Organic :)

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks digger,

a bit too pricey for me though. I'll need to make do with watering cans! Do you remember the story during last year's hosepipe ban when 10 Downing Street were 'caught' using a hose that turned out to be a 'bowser with a dowser', that's what got me thinking about getting one.

The only ones I 've seen for sale are huge and way too expensive for me.

I think I know what you mean.......they are also called bodgers........it's like a large galvanised dustbin on wheels and handles to push it :)
I've been after one for ages with no luck. I just wish I could weld 'cos I got all the parts to make one :(

Repro models based on the originals were featured in the Sunday Telegraph gardening section last year (so you could search their pages) but were very expensive (and had modern wheels).

For simply pulling water around I use a trolley (used by anglers for pulling those big plastic boxes full of tackle around - yes that is me) with a drop in ply//batten adaptation to take a 25 litre container (ex- carpet cleaning fluid - £1.50 each bulk buy (10) from car boot sale).

I have no mains water, so that means with 2 trips in a day will water some crops + fill a couple of 40 gall barrels (I have total equivalent storage of 12 barrels).

Funnily enough I've been thinking about building some sort of trolley from wheeley bin wheels and a container from work - about 30L. I haven't done it yet but I'll post a pic if I do.
I saw bowsers when I went to Audley End and they looked the business.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I would use a wheelie bin or recycle bin.Secondhand of cause, the type that has the councils name erased.Fit a tap on front near the bottom to which you can connect a hose.If you wish to fill watering can,how about a gentle ramp then a platform complete with chocks to stop it falling off?

I could probaly make one in the time its taken me to type this.Someone keeps rearranging the keys :? BOB

feed the soil not the plants

You must be very proud of your son Shaun.  I love watching cricket, and I often listen to the commentary on the radio.

Water can be quite a problem on allotments if you don't have a mains supply near by.  I bought two water butts from Homebase today. They were doing a half price offer plus an extra 10% off... Brilliant  :!:
