Where are my snowdrops??
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:17 »
I planted some snowdrops 'in the green' this time last year.  Only one has appeared this year.  Where have they gone?  Is it worth planting somemore and trying again?

I've never had much success with snowdrop bulbs bought in packets: only 1 in 5 ever come up  :(

Have had much better results transplanting them from established clumps when they've finished flowering.

I planted a big clump (50) in the green last year...........only 3 up so far :(

I wondered if it was too dry under the hedge for them? O well...........they had 2 choices ::)

Re. splitting up established clumps. Are snowdrops protected in any way like bluebells are? Our ground is full of bluebells where they grew wild whilst the property was empty for 36 years and I understand it would have been illegal for anyone to come in and just take them (as it would be in any "public" place), but now that we own the land we are allowed to dig them up and give them away if we wish. I think thats how it works...  ::)

Whilst digging a post hole the other day i dug up a couple of bluebell bulbs that had shoots and thought about putting some in the plot then thought about getting caught doing so so dint bother but they would have looked nice on  the bank along my tree line.

Snowdrops are out in some of the woodland area, they seem to actually to perform better after snow as when it clears it forces them into a stronger display it seems.

Daffs are making an appearance too sporadically.

It's only the native (smaller) bluebell that's protected. It's being taken over by the big invasive Spanish variety. Bit like squirrels and ladybirds and..... :(

Protection issues aside, per the Theft Act 1968, you can pick flowers, fruit and foliage of wild plants as long as it's not for reward.

You commit an offence if you uproot the plant.

What's the law on taking seeds, I assume that's as big an offence as uprooting?
