onion sets, heat treated??

hi,
heat treated onions, ar they any better?

if so can anyone recomend any and where to get thm from?

You can get them from most seed catalogues. Never tried them and, as my first time growing onions from seed worked so well last year I won't bother with sets unless I have a crop failure.

I grew some from Suttons. They do not deliver them until April.

Because they are heat treated they are dry and take a little time to get going.

Final yield good and stored very well.

None bolted to seed.

The heat treatment as mentioned late in Slamo's post is to stop them from bolting and going to seed.
Most local garden centers and wilkos etc will sell them without you paying postage, have a look around.

I grew two lots of onion sets last year: - Stuttgarter Stanfield Sets and New Fen Globe Sets supplied by Marshalls.
Stuttgarter were standard sets and the New Fen Globe sets were heat treated and both planted in the same bed at the same time.
The New Fen Globe sets produced a much, much better crop but that may of just been a one off for last year.
Anyway I will try similar sets again this year.

The vouchers and other offers always seem very attractive.... but I have to remember what I really need rather than getting carried away with what I'd like

What I did last year and this was to buy 2 packs of Sturon Sets from Wilkos for 99p per pack. In each sack there are approx 100 sets so for 200 Onions it cost me �1-98.

None bolted last year but if they did then it would not have mattered because they cost me so little and I got so many. Although my Red Onions sets also form Wilkos were poor, about 40% of them bolted. But i can't find any heat treated Red Onion sets at Wilkos, B&Q or my garden centre.

Shallots are okay now but better to wait another 7 - 10 days but my Onion sets won't go in till middle to late March and on our site some leave it until April before planting Onions sets. We are in the NW of England so I suppose further south will be sooner than us.

I've always understood that heat treated sets are planted much later than non treated. Haven't used them for a while but I seem to remember that they din not arrive till April.
