Strwberries being eaten by slugs or slaters?
« on: May 24, 2007, 11:09 »
I was very excited to see a handful of red strawberries this morning during a visit to the allotment.

My two year old was really disapointed that he couldn't eat any because every single one had a large hole munched in it. There were slaters sitting in the hole, I'm not sure if they made the hole or if they just moved in after the slugs had a go, what do you think?

I put down some of the organic slug pellets incase it was the slugs, but if it's slaters I don't know what I can do.
Organic :)

Sorry but 'slaters' are what?  i am stuck are they woodlice ?or what, but the birds will peck your stawbs aswell as the slugs.
You wont have to wait long ans someone will give a better response. liz
If you cant be a good example then you must  be a horrrible warning........

To sit on the fence is not an option

Slaters = Woodlice
The slugs would have done the initial damge and the woodlice move in afterwards.
Anti slug measures are required.

slatericks in Orkney.  Yes, I reckon they eat only dead matter (probably the damaged tissue left by the slugs or birds).

My mother used to put empty jam jars over the developing strawberries (open end towards crown).  I wonder now if this was as a mini-greenhouse or as a slug detterent?  I'd ask her except that she's been dead for 10 years.

Thanks all, I will see what happens with the 'organic' slug pellets, hopefully they'll prefer to chew on these instead of my strawberries!

My guess is the birds. They LOVE strawberries and the little beggars will peck one hole into a berry then move to another berry and peck another hole, etc. In fact, they line up on the small fence backing the strawberry bed. This year is netting year and they can raid someone else's hard work. As for your other lice and slugs, they'll come after the birds have made the opening for them.
