cream legbar info required please!
« on: February 03, 2010, 21:33 »
hi! i like the look of the cream legbar, i know many of you keep them so could anyone please tell me what sort of size they are - are they a small breed or large - same as sussex? the reason i ask is that i would be adding to my mainly bantam flock (6 banties, sussex, maran, welsummer & araucana and 2 large fowl araucana) thankyou in advance! lucylou

Hiya lucylou,

I have a couple of legbars, currently around 12 weeks old and bigger than my banties. They are quite large muscly birds and do seem quite bossy at times! Mine aren't with the banties so don't know how they would react to them, although mine just may be going through that 'teenage' phase!

thanks steve! mmm if they are big breed i probably wont go for them - my banties arent true ones so are big for banties and my large fowl are small (if that makes sence) - as a flock they are more or less all the same size and i wouldnt want to add one or two that are so big they stand out! if you know what i mean? :)

Hi
My Cream Legbar isn't big at all, in fact smaller than my black rock............but her eggs are normal size as in not like banties!!  They can be very nervous birds & can be flighty!!

Mumsy, I wasn't saying they were huge, as in they are smaller than rhode island reds. I think that legbars are also classed as a light breed which is confusing to me, maybe I am just feeding mine too much!  ???

well that sounds promising then :D although i have just hit on a problem - my 17 year old daughter has just threatened to get a new piercing for each extra hen i get! - now im weighing up the possibility that she wouldnt notice a couple more  i think in reality it would take a while for her to notice!!  :D

Hiya Mumsy,

Nice little foursome there! Is the red dorking as dark as it looks in the piccy? Just out of interest how old was the dorking when it started laying?
See I wouldn't say that my legbars are as big as my dorking hens, but certainly as big as my hybrids. Maybe its the yorkshire water though!

Cheers

Hi
Yes she is & I think she was around 27 weeks when she started laying.  Holly is definately smaller than the Dorking, the hybrids & my marans, probably about the same as the Araucana.

They are small to medium size large fowls and quite round and compact.  I'd agree with the comment above about being more nervous than most.  Mine have been handled a lot from hatch and they still are quite wary though once in lay they do squat readily.

They are pretty and active birds which lay an attractive light blue egg and a good addition to any flock.

Have you thought of bantam faverolles? wonderful docile nature and lay a good sized egg for a bantam. Fluffy feet, beards and muffling make them stand out plus available in some pretty colours most commonly though are salmon. :) I breed a range of colours and  the blues are very pretty!

Hi  I breed Cream Crested Legbars they are about the size of a Wellsummer maybe not so thick set definately smaller than Sussex. Not a bad tempered bird though do like to free range. Mine often fly over the fence where apparently the grass is greener but they always put themselves back in the evening
