question on herbs
« on: May 23, 2007, 20:44 »
i have a load of herbs what need to go out in the garden.the place we have chossen is part of a raised bed.we have took out all the flowers what was in there and realised that there is only about 4 inchs of soil .what it looks like is that someone fillied it with rubble first.the whole of the raised bed is about 2ft .the soil at the moment needs a good sort as its full of flower roots but my question is this
would herbs grow ok with the stones under them or would it be better taking them out?

Spose it depends on which herbs are being planted, rosemary will love it as will most evergreen types, generally most Mediterranean plants prefer the free draining of rocky ground so I think you should be ok.

Keep the mint in a container or it will take over.   Parsley (and basil?) prefer a more fertile spot but will still grow.  Dill will do alright I think.

As Aidy says rosemary would love it, as will thyme, sage, oregano and marjoram.

Bung some compost in the holes for the greener ones and they will be OK
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
