Is this a sucker
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:20 »
A couple of years ago I got a very small blueberry bush and it's been in a pot (ericatious compost) ever since, it's now getting quite big and last year I had my first crop of 12 blueberries (I know a bit pathetic).  this year I'm hoping for a bumper crop but - there is what is obviously the original plant and coming out from the bottom, same colour and character as the rest but a new branch that looks really young and healthy whereas the rest just looks normal, not unhealthy but a bit older.

Is this new branch a sucker and should I be cutting it off, I've heard it's supposed to be pulled off if it is but it's too far gone for that.

Any advise gratefully accepted..

And Happy new year to you all, I haven't been on for ages.

D xx

Leave it, it's a vigorous new cane which is exactly what you want. You can lop the end off if it grows way bigger than the rest of the bush which will encourage fruit-bearing sideshoots.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Welcome!

Just a thought though about your low yield. It is usually recommended that you grow two different varieties together to improve pollination, you need to choose one reasonably close in terms of flowering dates.

(I have had two early-flowering varieties for about 4 years and would have had a couple of pounds off them last year if the blackbirds hadn't kept breaking into my obviously inadequate netting cage!)
