I am about to sow various summer crops and on the seed packets it says F1  What does this F1 mean and is it a good thing or not?

F1 means it is a variety which has been hybridised (crossbred - approx) to promote a certain characteristic, e.g. vigour, fruiting or stature.

The seed is more expensive (and you should not try to save seed from the plants)

Absolutely correct - plus you will find that you also get less seed for your money too!  So make sure you look after the plants that develop as these will be expensive little seedlings!
