Pinching out broads? / blackfly
« on: May 22, 2007, 17:49 »
Hmm whats all this about pinching out broad beans? I didnt know this was meant to be done and have just noticed the clumps of new leaves ( growing tip) have black fly on them?

My broads on average are about 1 - 2 ft tall so far...when were they meant to be pinched out? ...someone mentioned flowers of which i have no sign yet, just clumps of new leaves at the tips?

Help....i was so proud of them until just now :(

The text book answer is to pinch them out when the lower flowers begin to set pods. But as you say yours have not flowered yet I think you need to treat the black fly in whatever way you are happy with  :?

I reckon the black fly go for the tender shoots at the tips, so pinch them out with any fly still attached.  The beans will bush out more then.

If they persist, try a garlic spray.

My garlic spray didn't work unfortunately cos mine have quite a few black fly on them. I've just read a recipe for garlic spray on another thread though and will try that next year cos my spray is just crushed garlic and water - it does stink though.

It needs repeated applications, yummy.  Most things organic are not quick fixes.  Keep us posted.

Thanks Aunty but I'm certainly not the only organic bod on here, plus I don't get much blackfly up this way.

John's poll suggested 30% are organic : http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=868  What do the rest of you use please?

i don't have any blackfly on my broads - but the little beggars have made a lovely, tasty bed next door in the ruddy greens bed - so i'm on bug alert (and attack - )
garlic spray on exposed crops
carrot fly is baffled by old net curtains

just gotta get the ruddy cat - that keeps doing me onions

I used it for quite a while (my hands smelt sooo bad) but have slacked off from the plot in the last week or so due to various other commitments.

I picked as many off as possible tonight and pinched the tips off the worst ones that I had no hope of picking over. Then I sprayed them so I stink again now. Also collected ladybirds from the corners of the plot and put them on the plants.
