Growing Veg from seeds
« on: January 22, 2010, 19:05 »
I live in a small house not much room  to have seed trays, and the court yard is also very small, with no Green house, but I have a 4 tier mini green house. Where I lived before I had a large house, large Garden, with a greenhouse. I was wondering if someone has had the same problem growing seedlines, im a cramped area, and how did they cope. I wanted to grow from seed to fill the allotment that I have just recently come into. Or should I use Veg plugs instead, I did not want to do this, ( dont seem like Gardening). So any ideas or advice please.

I would have thought that you could grow all the seedlings you want in your mini g/h, and also sowing some things direct on the allotment. May take a bit of juggling in a small space, but don't see why not :)

Don't sow too many seeds.  If  you want ten cabbages eventually sow around twenty seeds - not hundreds.  That way they do not take up much space.

Cheers,

Hi Tomboy. I used a small 3 tier plastic greenhouse last year and had no problems. I started early with broad beans and then cabbage and caulis and some salads. Left the greenhouse clear then for tomatoes and finally used it to dry my shallots.

Last year I sowed a few things directly into the ground to see if I could save some space.

Cabbage, broccoli, beetroot, lettuce, sprouts, raddish, spinach and peas all done great corgette and butternut squash didn't appear though.
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

I try to sow as much as possible directly into the ground, and seems to work  :nowink:

Leeks sown a bit earlier in trays woud have helped me get a better crop though, but as they are hardy your little greenhouse will  just keep them worst weather off them just fine  :)

I've only got window sills but managed to grow most from seed. I also swopped any extra with friends or put it on Freecycle which got me some swops too!

I think the advice from Gillie is great.  Sowing how many you need plus a few extra 'just in case' seems like the best approach.

also, you have an allotment. Until the seedlings are in the ground, there is space there to start them off. You can sow into modules, place them on the ground and cover with plastic containers weighted with bricks. Or set up a decent sized cold frame to put them in.

hi
i too live in a small house with a small yard.
what works for me is starting most seeds indoors on a table in front of a window, then them move to a small greenhouse in the yard ,when its a little warmer.

then i take them to the allotment ,where i cover some with upturned plastic bottles to keep them going, until they're big enough to survive.
i have to do it this way as pea seeds, etc get eaten by mice on the allotment.

i then grow peppers+toms later in the season in the greenhouse in the yard.

richie's paperpots are a real money saver ! :)
