Seeds or Sets? Which makes the bigger onion?
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:55 »
I'd be interested in finding out the general opinion.

My own experience is that seeds have in the past given me some huge onions (Ailsa Craig) but I'd be interested in other peoples experiences.

Many thanks

There are many more types of onion seeds available in comparison to onion sets and therefore seeds are more likely to provide larger onions dependant on seed selection. Many seeds have been developed to grow show bench onions such as those supplied by Robinsons of Preston although I don’t know how good they are as I haven’t tried growing them. Sets tend to be grown for the average amateur gardener due to the ease of growing them and their consistent reliability. I grew New Fen Globe (Marshalls) sets last year and they grew quite large, too large for every day use, so I am planning growing them closer together this year. If you grew seeds and sets of the same type (Ailsa Craig for example) I would expect those grown from seed to develop larger due to longer growing period although I don’t think there would be that much in it on average.

I tried growing onions from seed last year as i have always grown from sets. i had a much better success rate with the seed (Ailsa Craig) as around 10% of the sets that i planted went to seed early in the season despite having a plentiful supply of water. this year i have sown some bedfordshire champions to see what results i get from them. :)

ive grown giant onions for years and the biggest were from seeds as they grow for longer, sets have a high risk of running to seed so they are not reliable
