Potatoes with too much leaf! (Using a grow bag)
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:52 »
Hello!

You may have seen a thread i posed in summerish last year about my trial of growing potatoes in a number of different ways. - I can’t find it though hehe.

I grew them:

Buckets
Proper "potato sack"
Ground
Stood up grow bag leaning against a wall.

I had the best crop out of the bucket/ground. (All Charlottes)

I thought the grow bag would do really well, basically stood up the grow bag and rammed in a few seed pots through various holes i made.

I got virtually no potatoes from it at all, but the foliage stretched for about 1.5m in places!

Is this a lack of light, or can a lack of space do this?

I ask mainly because i don’t have a garden now, so i need to choose a good way to grow pots, and im leaning towards buckets (Morrison’s sell there old flower buckets 8 for 99p i got a good crop out of them last year).

Has any one tried the grow bag method before?  If so how did it go?

Lew

Sorry can not advise on growing in grow bags but as to the Morrison buckets, my local Morrison’s also sells them but when I asked at the local flower shop they couldn’t give them away fast enough. Try your local florist first.

Lewjam - which Morrisons is it that you got the buckets from- I am also in sheffield - is it the one off the parkway? 16 for £2 is great. I ordered far too many seed potatoes this year so I plan on growing all my earlies in buckets and just the main crop in the ground.

My souvenier of our holiday in Cornwall this year was 32 flower buckets from Morrisons for £1.98. (Buy 16 get 16 free!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Tall foliage can be due to being in a very shady spot or probably too much nitrogen.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Anyone know if Sainsbury also does this with flower buckets? If so, who do you ask about it, customer service desk?

I was very fortunate and happened to be in Tesco on the day before Mothers Day.  There was probably 50 buckets.  When I asked the lady if I could have a couple she told me to go and get a trolley and take as many as I wanted - I took them all!

I used them to grow potatoes in last year.  Did better than in the potato grow sacks I had bought on a flush day.  The reason I really like them is you get a family dinner sized amount in them so they are very easy to use.  But, they need lots of watering.

so using the flower bucket method, what is the method for planting and how many spuds did you ram in there?

ie planting depth, partially fill, wait for foliage then top up with soil?

Too much water will also cause lush foliage and little cropping.

Not over impressed on the return for the effort and the amount of compost. In the main around a lb per tuber.
