woodchip
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:52 »
hi, i have been after some woodchip to place in my run to help solve the mud problem. On talking to a very helpful chap from a local tree surgeons he informed me that there could be shredded leaves in the woodchip which could be bad for the chooks. Is this true? I really dont want to pay for the expensive bark chippings in the shops!

 :) Hi TinTin
There's no doubt people on this forum a lot more experienced than me, but I've never heard of shredded leaves being a problem, if your chooks were free range, they would eat what ever was on the floor, and if they fancied tree leaves they would definately eat them.

Best Regards

laurel leaves give off cyanide when the leaves are crushed or burnt so you may want to check this isn't included.

Just did a search and noticed this thread.  We have free wood chippings delivered to our site, would they be ok to use as a base on the floor of the run?  I am worried they might hurt the chicken's feet or am I being overprotective?

I rang round loads of tree surgeons earlier in the year ... but nothing so far. Don't want to nag and ring again (nor do I have the time just now to move a truckload from the drive to the garden!) but I will have another go in the spring.

I used to use the chippings from my chainsaw or any old bark chippings I could get, laurel was my only concern. They seem to love anything like that to dig and scratch  in  :D
