Inital Plot clearing
« on: January 17, 2010, 22:03 »
Good evening everyone. I,m new here so be kind :) Hopefully I will be getting the keys to my new plot in March. However since this will be a brand new plot it is covered in rough grass ect ect. I plan to spray with roundup then rotovate later, however when I spray few if any of the perennial weeds will be showing(march) and thus when I rotovate I will end up spreading docks ect all over my plot......any suggestions as I want to get potatoes in this year ???????

First use a garden fork to dig out the big boys like dock, dandelions, thistles, etc as well as large clumps of anything. Otherwise they'll be a long time dying from any sprays. then spray the rest, timed so it can work for at least 3-4 weeks undisturbed. Remember to spray only when you see green top growth as this is how roundup works - it is sucked down into the sprouting plant on active leaf growth, and never on a windy day. by 4 weeks you should be able to rotovate or whatever you want to do. As you rotovate, pickup any root bits you see as they could still be alive and will regrow.  Good luck.

April isn't so bad as spuds don't like to grow in cold soil.
