snow/frost damage
« on: January 10, 2010, 20:33 »
Hi there

I managed my first visit to the allotment today for about 5 weeks basically to pick some sprouts. To my horror I noticed the micro mesh stretched over the spring greens has collapsed under the weight of the snow, damaging the plants in the process. Can anyone tell me if they will recover?

thanks

Mine's down too - cant see what damage has been done.   :(

Just a thought from last Feb - we were slow (read dispirited) in getting the netting back in place.  Where we did and/or where it bounced back, the greens recovered after a fashion. Where we didnt and the greens were accessible to the flying rats, there was nothing but a stump after a couple of days.    I suppose they were accessible food when most everything else was still covered with snow.   ???

If the stems haven’t kinked or cracked the plants will soon recover when it warms up.  I have had the same problem a couple of times and will take the covers off if heavy snow is forecast in the future. Mind you they didn’t forecast the heavy snow last week in our area so I guess I would have been caught out.
