Compost Mix Calculator
« on: January 08, 2010, 13:19 »
Happy New Year everybody.

I came across this useful compost calculator whilst trawling the web but for some reason I cannot copy the link.

Google 'Klickitat County' which is in the state of Washington and then in their search box type compost mix calculator and you have it.

Enter the types of things you normally compost, Click on the tab and a list appears.
Enter a unit figure for the sq ft . I entered 1 which would represent a bucket or barrow depending on the size of your compost

The bottom right hand column will have a figure which you now need to be about 30.
To do that alter the amount of each item until that it reached.

I compost veg waste/horse manure and sawdust and to get a good mix I need a ratio of
2:1:5, Also adding green leaves does not affect the ratio and can be added anytime.

I am in the process of stockpiling -the allotment is a no go area at the moment-and then I can mix my materials to get the quickest compost.

I know we all tend to throw what we have on the compost heap as we get it but I kept a stock of sawdust throughout the summer to mix with the greens and got good compost. This year I have a good supply of horse manure which also needs composting.

Have a play and see what you think.

Fun to play with.... :) but I'm not sure it takes account of the ups and downs of composting. For instance, the veg plot waste in November is far higher in carbon than the sappy stuff in summer but you still only have 'vegetable waste' to enter.
And what about shrub prunings?
And hoover contents?
Now I have chickens the whole equation has gone to pot, anyway!! Going to have to find an awful lot of cardboard...
Thanks for posting this, tho. It's made me think about a new composting regime to accommodate chicken poo!

I agree with hillbilly.....fun to play with but my compost contains a huge variety of stuff.

grass, leaves, seaweed, kitchen waste, cardboard, shredded wood, horse muck, sheep muck, hoover bag contents, etc, etc, and of course, lots of pee.

Not sure what the analysis would be but the veg seem to like it  :)

"Compost mix - calculator" ???

Most run on batteries or solar power these days but I suppose using compost would help save the environment
