I would be inclined to hang fire on any seed sowing until after this cold spell finishes. :D

Phill I got my allotment notice Christmas eve and since then have only managed a few days working on it before the snows arrived. It is a jungle and I plan on going to hack down brambles in the snow tommorow since there is nothing else useful I can do. But I ordered my Cat litter trays on Amazon just half an hour ago so I am ready to get started with my leeks. I will probably hang on a bit cos last year I started at the end of Jan indoors - (yes I know they are meant to be outdoors but last year was my first year growing them!) - Most of them went to seed so lesson learnt. I still have a few leeks buried under snow - rumour has it the cold improves the flavour?

Just out of curiosity, what`s with  the use of litter trays? What`s wrong with good old fashioned seed trays? :D

Litter trays are twice as deep - more room for root growth.

If it's good enough for Medwyn Williams.......
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I did find mine easier to transplant from the litter trays, 'cos the roots go down rather than get tangled as they do in a seed tray. It worked well for me, this year, as they didn't go in until after the early potatoes were dug. :)
I suppose you would get untangled roots by sowing in modules, but I think you would have to transplant them earlier than I did.

If the roots get tangled you just tease them gently apart. :tongue2:

If the roots get tangled you just tease them gently apart.

I used a suggestion which is in one of John's books to soak them in water first.  Came apart really easily.

There are eighty seven ways
To raise your leeks these days.
And every single one of them - is right.

Such poetry,it brings a tear to my eye :'(

Tad long for a haiku though? ... /me rushes off to ask googy what *it* says a haiku is, cos googy knows all :|

Hmmm ... apparently it depends on your definition of "mora" ... according to the wiki god

The internet has almost as many gods as our ancestors ... as much a things change they stay the same eh? ;)

Just in case .. Appreciated the poetic comment :)
