Lark or Swift: which is the most productive?
« on: January 06, 2010, 12:34 »
It's too snowy here to even go out never mind do any gardening, so thought it might help others as well as myself to see how members have fared with these two very popular sweetcorn varieties recently.

I grew Swift last year and probably averaged 1 good cob and 1 half-filled cob per plant; they all looked at one point as if they were willing to produce up to 3 but I think the poor weather in July and August were against them.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I grow both and their production is very similar, with Lark having slightly longer cobs on average. Swift is about two weeks earlier. The number of cobs depends on feeding, watering, pollination and the weather, but I often get 2 and a 1/2 cobs per plant.

I grew Swift and a variety called Early extra sweet f1 hybrid from T&Ms .

Got 2 per plant from Swift 2 + from the extra sweets.

The Extra sweets where ready a fortnight earlier and far better. Im just gowing Extra sweets this yr, and bought my seeds yesterday  ;)
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I would seriously encourage people to have a look at Moles seeds when buying sweetcorn.

You can get a packet of 200-250 for less than the price of a pack of 30 from T & M. No postage either.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Come on guys and gals!

Four votes, one of which was mine! (I'd expect more than that standing as a BNP candidate in Bangladesh!)

I  voted - but maybe not that many grew those two varieties. There are many others.

True, (and thanks!) although those two varieties have been mentioned several times on this site in the past. Never mind, I'm sure the "best sweetcorn" debate is far from over this year!  :)

The best sweetcorn I ever grew was simply called "Supersweet|". I suppose it may have disappeared so as not to be confused with the all encompasing "Super Sweet" varieties.

Why is it when you find a good one, they take it off the market? - like Peer Gynt sprouts.
