Nb There are two types of fennel, only one of which is bulbous.  The aniseed smell should be the giveaway for either type, though.

I've taken the fern to a local expert?? and have been told it is asparagus, so what do i do, should it be cut back or left as it is.

Leave it as it is, you don't have to cut it down, some leave it to give a bit of protection to the crowns, most cut it down to tidy the bed up.

(If it were mine I'd be sending some to the RHS because I've never seen evergreen asparagus before!)
