Any suggestions for apples in Wales?
« on: January 04, 2010, 22:59 »
I've just trawled the forums for variety suggestions and found lots of useful info but not many specifics.
I'm after three apple trees, a plum and maybe a quince to grow at around 210m in north Wales.

Any ideas for ones to look at would really help as there are SO many!?

As you say, there are SO many!

Think what kind of apple you want.  Early, mid season, late keepers? Cookers, Dual purpose? Dwarf? bigger bushes? Do you prefer bright red apples, or russet ones?

Have you got decent soil? is it acid? Is your garden sheltered? I presume you have a rather wet climate, something apples do not much like, so look for varieties which are known to do well in damp conditions.

I suggest that you look for a fruit grower (NOT a garden centre) close to where you live, or with a similar climate and ask their advice.  Or you could ask the advice of the RHS or Brogdale, but us amateurs only know what has worked (or not worked) for us.

You will probably need a self fertile plum and maybe good old Victoria would suit you.

I have tried to grow quinces - and failed to get a crop.  If one of your choices does not perform for you within a few years have it out.  Do not go on nursing a tree that does not like you.

Cheers,

Gillie

You might already have found these sites for apple trees in Wales:

treefruitsocietyofwales.org.uk

There is also Dolau-Hiron and Marcher apple but cannot obtain the links for these.

Hope this helps.

Just been out in the garden and I have a Cox Cymraeg tree which was grown by

iansturrockandsons.co.uk who are based in Bangor.

These sound interesting:

Trwyn Mochyn (Anglesey Pigs Snout) - "an old green cooking apple dating back to 1600"

Afal Nant Gwrtheryn (hidden village golden russet)

Fantastic pointers - I'll follow all those up. Especially the Welsh connection. Big thank you.  :nowink:
I did send a really detailed email to Walcots outlining all the conditions mentioned by Gillie and asking for recommendations but have not had a reply.
