Shed competition
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:55 »
Hi, I am trying to organise a shed competition for our allotment, in June. Has anyone done this ? If so could you give me some pointers on marking criteria. Thanks would be very grateful.

welcome to the site ozboz  :D

What an unusual competition.  Whatever your criteria, I'd suggest that they are broadly revealed in advance so people know what they're being marked on (feedback from plot competition this year in our city).  Also, try to select criteria which don't exclude one section of tenants e.g. if you had a criterion which gave weight to involvement of children, that runs the risk of excluding the old timers and anyone without interested kids.

Only you will know what weight you want to give to where a shed sits on the sliding scale of brand new > quaint > being held together with grandad's hat pins and really quite lethal

Perhaps for starters you could consider criteria such as:

- innovation in design (structure)
- innovation in design (appearance, i.e. how colourful etc it is)
- recycling of materials
- some phrase that sums up whether it enables lots of rainwater to be harvested
- wildlife friendly
- something about growing stuff e.g. living roof, hanging baskets, window boxes etc
- variety of usage and/or inside layout (care needed here as you don't want to be asking people to reveal too much about what's inside for security reasons)

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You could have a section for most innovative 'extra' such as a cosy corner, treats cupboard, magazine store ( gardening of course), solar light, fancy kettle etc. Just have to be careful it was based on originality and not value.

How about a 'best cartoon' or drawng prize ?

we had a Best Shed compy for our lotty open day one year and it was well received. It was a bit of fun though and just an add on to the main lotty compys.  I think if you start going into minute detail with rules etc it won't be fun

Can you remember how it was judged? Was it general or did it have a set criteria. It is for a fun day so not to serious. Thanks. ::) :nowink:
