Sweetcorn In Pairs?
« on: May 19, 2007, 19:45 »
I sowed my sweetcorn in pairs as requested on the packet and until the other day forgot about them. After reading the packet it says to gives 18" apart but because I have sowed in pairs and my book says to avoid disturbing roots I have gone ahead and planted them in pairs, do you think they will be ok or is it worth replanting and disturbing the roots?

Also I have some space between them is there anything I can grow? I have some carrots what would love that soil but is it ok to grow them in between?

I am new to this lol, thanks in advance for your advice :)
First year at growing veg, not too fussed about being organic, but if I can I will, be nice ;)

If you can't split them, stick them in and give them a chance. Mr Fothergill tells you the "perfect" way, but I've seen them in fields closer together with no adverse results.

I'd put them in together as Sally says, Don't know about carrots but it's worth a try, also you could try lettuce which may welcome the shade, radish's, or something bigger like squash. Best way to learn is to try different things I try something new in the growing approach every year. If you go with the carrot idea let us know how you get on.
Next year "chit" your sweetcorn before you plant them in pots, then just 1/pot.

I've seen it suggested that you plant dwarf beans between the sweetcorn plants. Haven't tried it tho'

You'll find that when the sweetcorn plants reach a good height, not a lot of small plants will grow between them, due to lack of light. You'll notice that there will be very few weeds in your block of sweetcorn.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
