Kestrel has great all round use and taste. It is also very disease resistant.
Charlotte is the King of the salad potatoes.
Swift is the fastest early potato.
Setanta has the best blight resistance and is a tremendous maincrop variety suited to roasting and chipping due to its high dry matter.

Kestrel is probably the best potato that I have grown in my garden.

If I had to only grow one it would be Anya. I'm partial to Nicola, too.
Going to grow Desiree this year - any tips?

I was looking at setanta as a replacement for Desire which got a strange brown disease inside last season, has anyone grown them and what do they taste like?

Picasso is the best one I've grown.  Not too much damage for a main crop and really good for baking and mashing :)

My only experience of growing potatoes was with maris piper last year,
I grew them as earlies and also as maincrop, the earlyies were as they should be but I was very dissapointed with them as a main crop.
This year I'm growing:- belle de fonternay
                                          desiree
                                          king edwards
and kestrel which I saw one of the old chaps on the site grow last year and was very envious.
Fingers crossed for some produce to store away this year.
My mum keeps chuntering on about Blackpool potatoes she used to get back in the 50s, she says she has never tasted anything like them since she moved away from the north, she wants me to gow them but as usual with mother she hasn't got a clue what they might have been lol.
     Mothers eh, blessem

The best variety for taste I have grown was Concord - a waxy potato like the next best - Charlotte.

What happened to Concord ? - It seems to have disappeared.

Wilja for me.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Pink Fir Apple tastes the best and stores really well.... shame it's small, not particularly high yielding next to the modern varieties, has large, agressive top growth, oh, and it's about as knobbly as it could possibly be..... it's also a late main so you don't get to eat it until the end of September......

I'm trying a lot of spuds this year, will have a better idea come the autumn.... doubt there's anything better tasting than PFA though.... it would be shouted from the rooftops.....

We grew some Charlottes last season which were great..I could eat Charlottes everyday. Excellent Boiled - served hot or cold & I think they saute well too.

However (as I've answered in another thread) Mona Lisa is my new favourite, although I've ordered this years spuds before I tasted Mona Lisa..however...the ones I ate were grown in South France in lime stone soil so I do not know if my Brummie clay will produce the same results.

..I thought Wilja cooked up badly... they broke up quickly when boiled but they are popular.

Desiree are fluffy inside with crispy red skins when roasted - a good spud.

I hope this helps.
