poo concern
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:40 »
With six hens all now roosting in the ark, it's clear that just one has runny, yellow poos ... this for two nights in a row. No blood, not foamy, recently been wormed - it looks like a normal caecal poo. It it were just one night, I'd put it down to 'something she'd eaten' but after two nights, should I be concerned?

I looked up coccidiosis, but it doesn't fit. Nevertheless, where do I get a treatment for it (just in case)?

Thanks for your help :)
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Coxoid is available from most pet shops that sells bird feed.
The poos could be from different birds therefore if you have looked at the poo charts and found that it matches the caecal then chances that is what it is (often 1 every 10 poos - not that I make a point of following my girls around counting their poos  ).
Are they looking healthy otherwise?
Here are the poo pages should you or anybody else reading this  want to check:-

Staffies are softer than you think.

i agree with joy, i dont count their poo's, but just look at what is the majority, an occasional one i dont bother about, its if there are a lot of very off or green runny ones i start to check.
have had a lot of experience this year over this.
check but dont worry too much.

This one 'pile' at night shows it's every poo from the bird, not the occasional poo. I don't worry about soft poos during the day, but at night, I expect to see mostly firm droppings.

All the hens seem healthy and bright. And I think all are laying.

If it carries on, I'll try ... not light enough in the morning and it's been very wet, too, so haven't taken any pics of the hens for a while now.

I tend to agree with Grumpy Dad over this.  Unlesss it's persistent and there are other symptoms i wouldn't be over concerned.  The very wet weather can cause such events if they've been drinking from puddles etc.  If you are confident of your worming and there aren't other symptoms it will probably sort itself out.
Generally I've not found that chx droppings alone to be a very reliable indicator as their droppings can vary a good deal.  Unless there's blood or it's persistent runny watery or green.

What did you use for worming ?

Most of us recommend flubenvet rather than verm-x !

Used Flub ... there's still just the one hen with runny poo overnight ... but no signs of any one of them feeling under the weather, so will carry on as normal for now!
