Snow and Sprouts
« on: December 20, 2009, 13:12 »
My sprouts are looking decidedly sad being covered in snow. I know sprouts are meant to be better frosted, but should I put my wellies on and go out and rescue them from the snow? Im not sure how well theyre liking the change in weather!
Should I a) leave em where they are, b) dig them up and leave on the stalks, or c) pick em all and hope to god the kids want sprouts with everything for the next week?
Any advice appreciated!! :)

Leave them where they are.
Sprouts taste loads better when they have had snow on them.

Leave them be. They'll stand much more cold than this.

They have their own in built "anti-freeze" system & will pick up once it warms up.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'll be out cutting mine down and bringing them in tomorrow morning, and also some beautiful leeks I just read a mouth-watering recipe for.
Perfect. :)

I've picked my sprouts today for tomorrow's dinner (you can't get fresher :D).  I've also dug up a couple of parsnips - is 2lb the norm for a parsnip?  For some reason (its my first time of growing them) I expected them to be about the size of the ones you get in the shops ;).

I also had a lovely thick stew today with parsnip, carrots, onions, garlic and leek - the only item in my stew that wasn't grown was the meat

I have had a few snips this size - luckily chopped one up and put in the freezer last week, just as well cos there was no way of getting anything out of the ground today - managed to kick a swede loose from its roots tho

sprouts - got plenty - cant wait to eat them tomorrow - all my own veg bar the spuds as they all got blight and had very few...scoffed them all months ago now

I've just seen the piccie = really impressive.  Didn't think of taking a pic.  I chopped it up = it really did need some chopping - my OH got a saw out to cut it down a bit, then I put some in a pan with carrots for tomorrow, some in my stew for today and the rest went in the freezer.

Had a look at mine yesterday the sprouts seemed fine above the inches of snow , but me spring greens looked a bit ill, first time ive grown these so i suspose they are built for it.

(Any excuse to show your pic lol)
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
