seaweed
« on: December 16, 2009, 18:42 »
I am able to collect plenty of seaweed as I live on the coast; however, I'm not sure what crops it would benefit and should it be left to rot or dug straight into the ground. Would it be any good as a mulch in spring?
All the best of the season :D

My mate and myself picked a black bin liner each from Weymouth/Portland harbour last weekend. It was "high and dry" stuff. We double bagged each of them and threw them in my car boot. On the way home we were inundated with flies that had somehow manged to get out. We put a third bin liner over them (after getting rid of the flies already in the car) and we still had problems with other getting out somehow.
Anyway, it's on the compost heap now.

Go to the trouble of finding out who owns the beach and try to obtain written permission from them to collect seaweed, when and how much. Then you know you are in the clear and can show anyone who asks that you are ok to do so. Not always illegal; just quite rightly controlled.

I understood the area between high and low water was owned by the crown. Don't suppose her majesty's that bothered.

Anyway, isn't it a traditional right like collecting firewood sufficient for one's own needs or gathering wild fruit.

If some desk-bound bureaucrat says don't do it that seems like a pretty good reason to go out and grab a sackfull

You can get written permission from the crown. My father does the old metal detecting and is a stickler for doing things by the book. He has written permission to take items from any beach owned by the crown.

If it is washed up it is classified as flotsum and jetsum.
It is legal to forage the high tide mark

It is illegal to take seaweed, just as it is illegal to remove stones or sand form a beach. If caught you are facing a fine of up to £5000 and/or a prison sentence of up to 6 months.

I thought that you were allowed to collect loose seaweed where it has been washed up with the high tide, but not to pick/pull it off the rocks where it grows.

Have we got any legal types who could kindly look it up for us?

Please :)

It is not illegal to take any plant from the wild.
It is illegal to uproot and remove certain plants.
And you can remove washed up seaweed from the sea shore and you can forage the high tide mark.........
