Nutshells as pest defence?
« on: December 15, 2009, 13:09 »
Hi All,

We have plenty nutshells going spare at this time of year with a bowl of nuts and the nutcracker permanently to hand. I wouldn't consider putting them in the compost as I'm sure they would take far too long to break down, so we normally throw them onto the fire while its burning (as it is every evening). I wondered if anyone uses them as slug defence around plants or border edges, much like crushed eggshell? Or has anyone any other clever uses that they wish to share?

They'd need to be broken down into fairly small bits and thickly spread. Not sure they'd be all that effective but it certainly wouldn't hurt to try. If  nothing else, the shells would be broken down enough to compost faster in situ.

Crushed nutshells are good for topping off potting compost on indoor arrangements  / plants rather than just seeing bare compost. Also mix them with the compost if you need more drainage. Must admit, I usually just throw them on the fire as well.
