Dispatching for the Pot
« on: December 12, 2009, 09:10 »
Hi,
We intend to get Chickens for their eggs and the pot.
I am a trained butcher so gutting and preparing for the table is not a problem but what is the most humane method of dispatching a Chicken?

I am total newbie to Chooks  but have heard of wringing their necks , using a 'cone' stunning them then bleeding.

I really want to dispatch the bird as quickly  and painlessly as possible but bearing in mind I only have a small Lottie and would probably dispatch one bird per week and perhaps our own Turkey at Christmas, so price will come into it and don't want to spend a lot of money. But if something worked and lasted a long time then I would be prepared to purchase.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I am certainly no expert here as I get someone else to do mine as and when. However, pulling their necks, if done properly, is probably the most humane way for your situation. 'Wringing their necks' is a bit of a misnomer as what you need to do is cleanly break their neck and twisting it, apparently, is not the right way. If it doesn't faze you it should be easily learned from someone who does know. I'm sure someone who knows more will be along shortly. Good luck. :) :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

We have a friend who dispatches his by chopping the head off as he says its got to be dead if it has no head!!!!! His wife holds the body he has one hand on the head and its done in one chop. Probably not the best way but it works for him!
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!
