Thanks, knowing it works for others gives me the confidence to try something different.

Are the seeds normally in garden centres or only available mail order from T&M?

Will I be too late to get some in now?

What do you think of getting it going in a coldframe or cool greenhouse?

Just found this -

Watercress - Hardy perennial

Medicinal and culinary herb.
Rich in vitamin A, C, and D. Watercress has a spicy taste the leaves are added to salads. Can be cultivated in the garden or in pots or punnets must be kept very moist, pots or punnets can be stood in water, the water being changed daily. Outdoors broadcast sow onto shady moist soil, keep moist. Watercress is an excellent addition to mixed salad leaf for the salad bowl.

I never change the water as I don't stand it in that much, when I see the water as gone I top it up.

Found good additional advice in both Biggs, McVicar & Flowerdew and Redaers Digest books:

The bronze-green variety is more hardy than the dark green (both native).

Plant 4" cuttings from shop bought plants in Apr/May (1 week to rrot in water so there still appears to be time + 2nd planting in August for protected crop (needs ventilating).

Don't use sheep poo to fertilize as may contain liver fluke.

Off to the greengrocers tommorow.
