I've been making sweeties
« on: November 27, 2009, 19:30 »
We have a fund raising event tomorrow and I've made choc/pistachio fudge, it cost £7.34 to make  but it made 10 bags and I will be able to sell them for £1.40 per bag. I tested a bit (for quality control obviously) and it was fantastic, it was a Nigella recipe.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/tv_and_radio/nigellaexpress_ten.shtml

I also made her "hokey pokey" where I come from we call it cinder toffee and that was really cheap tp make and is really good too. It made 5 bags and I did end up with lots of crumb sized bits :( so I'm going to use them as an icecream topping :)

Well done Poolfield!  :) You could always make some ice cream and put the crumbs of cinder toffee through it...... * slurp *  :D

They sound delicious!  Just looked up the hokey pokey recipe and it looks quite simple to do.  Think I might try some with a view to including it in my Christmas hampers.

I'm just home again after a busy day at the Nativity Exhibition and sweetie sales, all the cinder toffee has gone so will have to make another batch tonight. The fudge was VERY well received but I haven't got another "ton" of chocolate to make any more.

I also made the recipe with marshmallows and rice crispies but I'm not impressed with that.

It was a lovely day and the church looks gorgeous with 42 exhibits and lots of T lights and Holly and Ivy everywhere. Seems a shame we have to take it all down again on Monday.

Sold rather a lot of Christmas puds again and have orders for a 3 pint and a 2 pint that I had run out of

It's a good job the garden doesn't need too much attention at the moment

It was deemed a successful event even though we were a bit washed out today, you had to literally wade through water under the lychgate.

I had to eat last bag of cinder toffee myself  cos I couldn't see it go to waste

Talking of not wasting things - I knew the tin of treacle I bought just to use a couple of spoons for the Christmas cake would sit in the cupboard for the next year so I made treacle toffee yesterday. Very successful! Some will go in our hamper present for my "eco warrior" step daughter and husband. The rest well - nothing goes to waste!
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

A toffee hammer would have been really useful to break my cinder toffee, it did end up all over the place cos I hit it with a spoon

Am I doing something wrong, because when I've tried the Hokey Pokey recipe it tastes mainly of the bi-carbonate and goes soggy within a day?
