Breeding ducks?
« on: November 26, 2009, 21:04 »
Hi All,
I have seen the Aylesburyes mating with the Kakhi Campbells, I have been told that the eggs are now fertile, so does anyone know how I go about hatching them without an incubator?

Thanks,

Yet again.  :D

You would need a broody or an incubator. Broodies this time of year are quite hard to come by (unless you have silkies) Duck fertility is quite low this time of year, even if they are laying, personally you are better to wait until early spring :)

With Foxy on this. Spring is the best time for chicks/ducklings.

If you had an incubator and the eggs were fertile you would have ducklings hatching at about Christmas. Cute maybe but very impractical. At that time of year you would have to have them under heat till almost 8 weeks when they are fully feathered and they are really big by that stage.
Broodies (especially duck broodies) will be erratic at this time of year and may well get bored half way through.

Be patient  :)
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Thanks for that! No I have no problem waiting, it's just that I noticed a bit of romance going on! I wouldn't have thought this was the best time, bit cold!

Anyway am due my own chick in a week! So will be busy with that enough till spring LOL! :D
Thanks again.
