they are part of the Allium cepa aggregatum group (like shallots and chives) but are a distinct variation, as are Egyptian and 'walking' onions ;)

Mummy, mummy, I want a walking onion and I want it NOW!  :tongue2:

I'll be doing a comparison of potato onions and three sorts of tree onions this year... I've got normal Egyptian trees, some supposedly uber hardy (though all the aggregatums are pretty hardy in my experience ) ones as seed from Finland and some Giant Catawissa trees that are my pride and joy... other plotholders reaction to the 4-foot tall multi-decked monster that one of them put up this year was as good as having 70-something old-timers visiting the plot to look at the Kelsae onions I grew.... I've also got Welsh onions, leaving me only Russians to complete the set of commonish aggregatums..... though there are all sorts of top-setting onions around the world, I'd like to get some of them.....IIRC Ethiopia and Turkey both have endemic varieties in their highland areas.....

In pots or trays? Is it a cold greenhouse?

Only want to know so I can make a start  ;)

The seed packet for my Welsh onions was also stamped up Russian onions, so that supplier obviously thought that they were 1 and the same ::)

Also, I think Welsh onion IS Russian onion, as a derivation of the word 'welsh' is 'foreign' in Russian....they aren't really Welsh at all.......walesh or something similar.

Hmm... I'm pretty certain I've seen two varities growing together and Welsh were the ones I have now (quite prolific once they get going) but the Russians were bigger and sort of that blueish green that some leeks are..... oh well we're getting off-topic.... I'd stick out  a request for some on the swaps pages.... I find that once you have a few wierd things you can always swap for other ones, I'd offer some of mine but I only goit five corms in a swap this year, hopefully next year I'll have spares and all the spare Catawissa's have gone too......

Thanks for the info, I had no idea there were so many different types of onion. How do they rate, taste-wise?
