Legality of Feeding Kitchen Scraps to your chickens
« on: November 16, 2009, 13:55 »
Hello All,

My wife and I are about to embark on keeping chickens and I must admit to be very excited about it.  I was looking forward to using our vegetable kitchen scraps as part of our going greener and being more self sufficient plan, however I have found this:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalhealth/Illegal-feeding/index.html

It states that we cannot use any kitchen scraps at all!  I'm mighty shocked by this as it wasnt mentioned on any chicken forums/sites I've been on.

Is this not something that is well known about in the chicken keeping community?

Sorry for such a heavy first post :(

Thanks,
Bom.

yes, thats what the law states, no food that comes from your kitchen is allowed to be fed to your chickens.

hope you abide by the law and throw good wholesome peelings away instead of providing food to your chickens, and dont keep any pasta either, it must all be thrown away...

along with the eec who make stupid rules

if the law is right, then when i cook pasta for my hens (when i had them a few yrs back) as  a treat then i was braking the law???,  so that also means we cant give them bread soaked in oil? or any treats that we class as food for us?, im i right... if so better go and hand myself in to the local police station then, lol

i am sure you prepared your food in the shed, which means it was not prepared in a household kitchen, and is therefore exempt.

In that case, we'd all better pop along and hand ourselves in!  It's stupid.  I only give veggie scraps to my laying hens and the pullets, never cooked stuff to the birds that will be eaten, but that's because we aren't the only ones that will eat them.

What's wrong with  bit of veg?  just going to look at the link.

I only buy sweetcorn for the chickens as I hate the stuff and I never got to try my home grown tomatoes as Little Red nicked them of the plants, the bananas were peeled outside so I'm OK then   Why do we not have a face smiley with a halo?  :(

Do any of you villains want me to bake you a cake with a file inside?
Staffies are softer than you think.

hi there, newatthis, that cake you described sounds just like the one I made a couple of weeks ago for my sil - he's a chocoholic so i made :- Chocolate sponge with real choc buttercream filling, around the sides & over the top then i stuch mini choc finger biccies round the sides with milky way stars on the top and covered it all with choccie sprinkles!!!  Daughter said it was much too rich for her - but as i said 'it was made for your husbands birthday!'
