Copper Braid for slugs
« on: May 13, 2007, 20:16 »
  Got some copper braid from Aldis - about £3 for 9 metres, enough to surround one of my raised beds.
Some say slugs get an electric shock, some say its an allergic shock. But they all say slugs will not cross the copper.
OK so I'm going to do a test but I need help in choosing between my cabbage/ cauli bed and my mixed American salad bed (This has red & green lettuce, cress, spinach and silver beet.
Which of these two beds would you say is most vunerable to the dreaded slug?
Former biochemist, now experimenting and having fun. :-)

9 metres wont go far jim i work it out to around 2 square feet so with correct spacing you might surround 2 caulis,i think i will stick to slug pellets
feed the soil not the plants
organicish

:D Yes Annie and that gives me some hard thinking about the design of my experiment.
I have seen no signs of slugs in either bed yet; and I have used slug pellets on both. Of course its only been a few days since the rains came!
So they might be forming an army down below both.
Very complicated.
Which of the two beds would you choose for the test Annie?

My beds are 3 x 1 M. I'm going to tack it on the wood around the perimeter - thats about 8-9 metres.

PSI still want to know which you think- in general - are more vulnerable to slugs, brassicas or salad stuff

If the cabbages are well grown then I`d protect the salad and fight the cabbage whites on yer brassicas!

Thank you SO MUCH for the warning ........ I have immediately covered them with viromesh but before I rest easy, are the butterflies specific to brassicas or are any other greens vulnerable?
And what about broccoli?
Jim :D
