Do you think they will lay this year?
« on: November 11, 2009, 20:06 »
My bantam girls are now ranging from 20 wks to 30 wks, they are looking good and have grown well, but no eggs yet. My children are desperate for them to lay, I have told them it will probably be next year when the days begin to get longer - what do you think?

Sorry to say you may have to wait a bit longer yet!  My oldest pullets are now 33 weeks old and still no sign of eggs.  Plus my older girls are getting older and are not laying well either!!!! :( :(

I've got 26 pullets ranging in age from 14 to 33 weeks and not an egg between them yet!!!

youre not alone! my 7 arent bothering either! i want OH to do some handywork on their coops but he is reluctant as they arent giving him any incentives! - he loves aggs and that was the only reason he agreed to get them in the first place :D

Awww! so sorry your boys are still waiting for eggies! none of my guys are laying yet, not even the dorking girls who should of started about 2 months ago! it has been cold, wet and dull here so can only assume they cant be bothered! my araucana girlie laid 3 beautiful eggs for us about 3 weeks ago but nothing since!? and not a thing off of the muscovies who are now 22 wks!

I am sure they will be worth the wait! Is your araucana older than mine? We have had fairly warm dry weather up until this week, it is a bit chilly now and very dark, so I guess that it will be Feb 2010 for the first egg.

By the way your dorking looks lovely!

My 2 araucanas are 30 wks old now and the dorking girls are 32 wks!  :nowink: i have about 10 customers all wanting a dozen eggs each week and i am having to limit them to just half a dozen when i have them! getting 4-5 eggs a day at the mo and they are from my hybrid older girls!
As soon as the days start to lengthen (which is from Dec 22nd i think!?) this will trigger them into laying.
Do you little girls free range? if so have you had a look around under bushes etc? do they squat at all?

Try some bread soaked in warm water with some cod liver oil, always get a good egg day when I feed that  ;)

There free ranging is limited at the moment - only when I am home, even then they wander about for a bit and when I look again they are all sitting on the log in their run! There has been no grand raucous announcements of 'I've laid and egg aren't I clever" from the older girls, so I don't think they are secretly laying - I will have a look tomorrow though! Oh well, it will happen soon enough!
I may try a bit of soaked bread as a treat anyway, I trying to find out what they like, they don't like sweetcorn or rice but do like a tiny bit of cheese and apple!
Thanks everyone :)

No, nothing from the Araucana's yet Joy!  31 weeks old now!  But look at Lucylou's girlie, she older than mine and Debbie's!!!!

The lavender one does keep sitting in the nest box though.  So she's obviously considering the layout!
