Night time
« on: November 10, 2009, 18:08 »
My chicks have been in the chicken enclosure for about a week now,
and every night i have to put them in the coop at dark, ive left them later but still no movement on there own.
Do you put food in the coop to attract them in ?
Its a battle, you put them in and the others are trying to get back out !

ideas please.......

Leave a light in the house to attract them in.

Is there a lot of light over their coop?

hi sluggs! would it be possible for you to help them in as it gets dark? - mine make their way in at about4.45 at the moment but in the past if they have not found their way in by the time it is actually dark they havent got a clue how to get in - theyve def not got night vision! is their house on legs?  they do tend to want to get higher up at night so if its not on legs perhaps you could raise it up?dont know what else to suggest - im sure youll have more ideas from others soon :D good luck

If the light with the movement sensor is on all the time and they can see, they wont roos because they think its light enough.  Suggest you turn off the sensor until they have roosted.

You and me both !  I'm going to leave a trail of corn up the ramp into the house now as it's getting darker .. hopefully I can persuade them to go in, and stay in !

I trained mine to go in with a handful of corn thrown in to the house. They soon got the idea. ;)

I laid the trail . . they came down off the roof to investigate . . Dorothy nommed her way up the ramp .. success... then matilda came up, went inside, and stood in the doorway so lucy wouldnt go in.  I got lucy in and matilda flew out and we had a benny hill moment round and round their standing perch ..... until I grabbed matilda and duly posted her in the front door.. there was a little grumbling from inside, and some shuffling, then it went quiet.  I waited for ages in case the little b**gers came back out the pophole but they stayed in.  I'll do the same for a few nights to see if they get the hint and start going in by themselves ... It's fun tho .. especially the benny hill bit ! :tongue2:

 :D Hi
I have a light in the coop on a timer plug which at this time of year is on from 17:30 till 20:00 by which time they have usually got themselves into the coop (my first batch in the early days I used to have to shoo  them in 1 at a time closing the pop hole after each one, but they soon learnt). It'll soon come naturally don't worry.

Best Regards
