Where's my garlic?
« on: November 07, 2009, 18:55 »

I planted good, certified (like me) garlic 4 weeks ago but it still hasn't shown yet. I haven't grown autumn planting types before so don't realy know what to expect. With the mild autumn we've had, I expected to see it through by now, or does it not show till next spring? Any thoughts?

I'd have thought it would be through.

How deep did you plant it?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just below the surface, about 1 1/2" (40mm)

I planted some in September and it's only just shown. Early sept at that.

If you are really worried, have a little dig around one but they usually come through eventually.

I start some off in modules just in case; last year I grew 180 odd garlics; you could say I love the stuff

Is it right that one type or the other - hard neck / soft neck - is slower to show? Buggered if I know which but if someone does and you know what you've planted it might explain it - if delving doesn't prove rotting or theft.

I don't know either Ivah, but according to the books the hard neck variety is more suitable for northern climates because they stand the cold more, presumably because they've been reared in that kind of climate. After saying that, I'm growing a soft neck variety (albigensian wight), because they came from a garlic farm in north yorkshire and the rep told me they had been grown there and were fine for that part of the country, and they did look particularly good so I'm giving them a try.
Sorry for waffling on, and back to my problem. I had a good furtle this morning while collecting veg for dinner (ox liver and onions and gravy you can cut with a knife ,yum) and all mine have  rooted so there is definate movement, they just havent sent growth upward yet. If the weather stays mild I expect to see them in the next couple of weeks.
 Thanks all.

I would give it a little while longer.  I've not even put mine in yet.  I will be putting mine in December.  Give it until end of November and if there isn't any little green shoots coming up, then get another load and try again.

Oooops, didn't really read the bit on fleece.  Don't use fleece.  You don't need any shelter for garlic.  Let the light and air in.  The colder the better.  Just put them in so they are just below the surface, and leave them to get on with it.  You don't have to do anything more to them, just don't forget to weed them when it starts getting warmer.
