Tode
Pickled walnuts are made from the immature nuts. The whole thing is pickled, caseing and all. If you want the recipe I have a good one I have been using and my addicted wife tells me it is "just like they are at home". I pick them the week before Christmas to get them at the right time. Thats not far away is it, Note:- add walnuts to must do list! ::)

;)  I had a friend who had a massive walnut tree next to her house.  On windy days the corrugated roof on her kitchen extension sounded like Beirut ... as walnuts thundered down upon it.  They rolled down the grooves and into the gutters for her to conveniently collect ... and she made green walnut wine.  Weird stuff ... can't describe the taste except it was like drinking the colour green ! Potent though.

Thanks Coatesi, would like the recipe.

But you're out of step   :D   :D

At Christmas, the walnuts have been picked, dried, and eaten (in part)    :D   :D

That must mean around June, here, I suppose. What size are they when you pick em ?

Certain varieties of walnut trees exude the ground chemical which won't allow other trees/plants to grow close, but even the plant experts find it hard to determine exactly which trees do that and which don't. If the seedling grew close to the parent tree, then its fine for growing among other trees.

I have walnut trees growing on my property and I've yet to harvest a single nut. No idea where they go but I have seedlings growing everywhere, including the raspberry patch. I pull the seedlings out every year but more show up. Odd as the raspberry patch is about 50 ft away from the tree.

I think you're not being quick enough, Trillium:  we pick ours up over about 3 days. If you wait a week: they're gone          :D

If you want to know when the nuts are ready tode, try the darning needle test.
June time. Push the needle into the immature nut, if there is a slight resistance caused by the forming nut shell but the needle goes through to the other side its fine, pick and pickle. If the needle is blocked by the forming shell, toooooooooooooo late, will have to wait for next year.
