My poor chicken is being hen pecked
« on: November 01, 2009, 19:34 »
Hello fellow chicken keepers,
I was hoping someone can help me I have 3 chickens and what was always the top bird is now being hen pecked by the other 2, it is getting worse and worse and today they have done a bit of damage to her wing so I have seperated them for today,  I have had  2 lots of food down and places for her to hide but she has just been sat on the high  up rooster bar as she just gets picked on as soon as she gets down, and today I saw one of them jump up to get her down so the other one could have a pop at her, I have checked her for red mite and treated them all and there are no other signs of illness apart from the one being hen pecked is a bit lighter but I think that is down to her not eating as much because of the other 2, and obviously she doesnt have as many feathers as the other 2, Has anyone got any suggestions out there

thankyou
Sally

Hi there fellow chicken keepers,
I am hoping someone can help me with my chickens I have 3 and the top bird is being hen pecked by the other 2 to the point where I have had to seperate them today because she has damage to her wing, I had their food in 2 different areas and there are lots of places to hide but she is a little under weight now and doesn't have that many feathers left. i have checked them all and now treated them for red mite but there was no sign of that and there doesn't seem to be any other illness, she spends most of her time up in the roosting bar but today one managed to knock her off so the other one could have a pop at her,
Any suggestions from anyone
thankyou
Sally

Hello sallylouise, you can buy beak clips (they are about £1 for 8) and if you put them onto the other two this should help stop the pecking. If they are drawing blood then get some purple spray to use as this will disguise the redness - chickens are drawn to red. You can get it from horsey places.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi Sally,
try Anti-feather Pecking spray, I have just bought some more, three of my girls have pecked another on her back to the point of bleeding!!
I used the spray which also has anti bacterial goodies in it and they are all back in kinda chicken harmony :)  .I will use again in a couple of days just to air on the side of caution, but it has always worked for me.
They will try and peck her but the smell and taste should deter them.
Good luck!!

Sid.
