I have just spoken to a friend of mine who lives up the road and she lost her cockerel to same symptoms.  Black Orpington Cockerel two years old. He stopped crowing and then became unsteady on his feet.  Went to the vet and nothing found next day was found dead. He had been vacinated as he was from a comercal egg farm that has Orpingtons as there pets.

They did not want to waste money on autopsy.

Hi everybody, Little Red and myself thank-you all for the good wishes and info'.
Well he is still with me here in the office, his pooh keeps alternating between normal and smelly runny stuff (office smells like a farm yard at times ).  He has fallen over once in the past two days when he was unable to get back up so I rearranged his bed in the cage so he couldn't get stuck again. His comb is pale and tail droopy but he is still wolfing down his chick crumbs and medicated water. We will persevere even if he has to spend a few weeks in here with me.
Now must go and find a gas mask
Staffies are softer than you think.

just took him outside for an hour and as soon as he got put on the grass his tail came up and he ran to tell a couple of the girls off . He stumbled a couple of times but managed to stay upright.
He is definitely growing his adult plumage and his neck and back are getting a lot of red feathers coming through. He still has a few fluffy downy feathers at the base of his tail (on the top). At least whilst he is out there I can clean the cage out and will keep him indoors for most of the time for the next few days. Will try and get a photo of him in the next day or so  :)

Doesn't sound like he's out of the woods yet though does it? Poor man, perhaps he is like you thought struggling with this growth spurt, because of his poor start. Fingers crossed :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Well he has spent all day outside and this will be his first night out in the coop since this all kicked off. Hopefully he will be ok for now although he still feels very underweight, but he is eating plenty so short of feeding him complan ( ;)) I don't know how else to fatten him up.

You lot are rude
How about mealworms? They are quite fatty but I don't know how that would affect the stinking poos  ::)

Awww! glad he is feeling a bit better!   Is this the little one that was from the same breeder as the other 6 you lost and my poor Belle? Still makes me angry thinking about it now! the amount of money we all got through not to mention all the heartache!  :( fingers crossed he continues to improve   he will need extra TLC by the sounds of it! but I know he wont have any trouble getting that  :D

Strange, isn't it........
I have a  Plymouth Rock bantam rooster with exactly the same, but possibly not quite as severe, symptoms.
Mrs Nig even named him Ronaldo after a 'certain' footballer known for diving and faking injury. ;)
He's really unsteady on his feet, can't run to save his life, and is always dropping one wing or the other to the ground in order to stop himself falling over...
...... He still manages to 'see to' his girls though.   He climbs aboard, taking most of his weight on his flapping wings, does his business, then falls off. No biggie.  ???
We had him from a breeder at the summer fair here at the castle... This is his second winter with us, and I hope he'll have many more.... And I hope yours does too.
Good luck.

Nigel.
