rotavator or cultivator

i am going to start looking for a rotavator /cultivator. Can some one tell me what the difference is between the 2 and which is the better of the two

As far as I'm concerned, they are the same.
A machine to dig up to about a spit in depth.
A Tiller, on the other hand, digs down only a short way, and is useful for preparing seed beds and the like. (not to be confused over the name MERRY TILLER, which is a rotovator/cultivator.

Now, sit back, and wait for replies from other areas of the country, and see the difference in the vernacular........

I think of the difference being:

One the engine only propels the tines. This is not suitable for preparing new ground, unless the ground is easily bug; tends to buck all over the place

Second type the engine turns the tines, but also drives the wheels. This will dig in to harder ground without bucking around.

But I couldn't tell you which is which and which has which name!

A cultivator is a set of rigid points/tynes towed behind a machine
A rotavator can be sub divided into tiller and rotavator. Tiller being a set of blades behind wheels and a rotavator being direct driven blades.
The best one to have, dont know
Have a read of the Howard book of rotavation in the info pages of this site.
I prefer the tiller.
