My polytunnel tried to escape
« on: October 29, 2009, 09:15 »
Help!! My new polytunnel took flight in the gales, didn't go far but ended up in a heap  >:(

It is (was) a very light weight, easy assembly job as advertised on this site. Alas, only rubber feet, a bit of pvc skirt and no means of anchoring down. I had weighted the surrounding skirt with scaffold planks but......

I think I can unbend & patch up the frame ( the pvc is ok) so has anyone out there any experience of this type or good ideas to keep it at home please?  ??? ???

Ours did a collapso job....in fact we are trying to re-build it today. The poles have all broken, so we are using heavy-duty waterpiping as a substitute. We used old (discarded and manky) railway sleepers to keep the skirt down.
It was false economy buying one of these, but will try and salvage what we can.
Good luck with yours.  ;)

As I've posted befoe the only reason mine is still in my garden is because it is tied on 2 sides to hedge/tree , the 3rd side has a guy line and stake in the ground ...the 4th side plastic is under paving slabs.
Still one piece of frame broke in the recent winds (not even gale force! ) :( it is now repaired with another piece of tubing and duck tape while I save for a proper one. Don't know if it will last that long though ::)

Ah, so I'm not alone !

Hope you managed to restore your's today agapanthus. The water pipe is a great idea .... not sure what to do about the snapped bits though.

Mumofstig (are you really?) it sounds as if you have found varied solutions. I think if I can get it back into shape I'll put posts inside to tie the upright poles to, then bank up the surrounding skirt outside with earth and stones.

Not going to bother yet though, probably get going again in time for the March gales.   :D :D

Thanks all.

no offence to anyone, but these are very low quaility and will last you a maximum of a year believe me i have had one!!

They are very weak so anchoring them is very difficult, also i would advise anyone with these to gaffer tape together were the flimsy steel pipes meet each other in the 4 corners and middle.
Sort of helps, i think you need a really, really sheltered spot for these unfortunatley :(

new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

Every polytunnel I have had, thats about 4 in the last 25 years, has had the skirt buried in a trench. Touch wood, not lost one yet. :nowink:

Get all your tunnels tied down as there are gales forecast for this weekend.
